Around the World in 15 Days

September 2nd, 2009

London was awesome… except that Craig left after two days.  It’s not as bad as you think… I mean, yes I was left in Europe, but that hurts your pride more than anything – after a day of heart break, I got mad and then I took a deep breath and moved on.   Read the rest of this entry »

A Girl and her Crew

July 29th, 2009

The NCOIC (broadcast chief) wasn’t here today since he’s going on leave.  I’m filling in while he’s gone and got a head start on 4-month list of to-dos.  Today’s task – getting the receive dish on a very tall pole attached to a t-wall.  It was easy enough to schedule the crane and labor, but once I got them here the real fun started.   Read the rest of this entry »

Insider's Look at Military Travel in the Middle East

July 15th, 2009

escapefromtallilESCAPE FROM TALLIL by SSG Derek Smith
CONTINGENCY BASE ADDER, Iraq – I stood by the airfield in Talil early on a Wednesday morning patiently waiting for two UH-60 Black Hawks to lift off from across the strip to come over and pick me up for a flight to Kalsu. I was on more of a time-crunch than I would have liked, but I was finally moving on with the next step of my journey. Read the rest of this entry »

In need of downtime

July 11th, 2009

I’ve worked a total of 34 hours the past two days.  At 3 AM last night I found out the file I had been uploaded for the past 6 hours wasn’t going to work and I had to make another file to upload.  I ended up leaving around 3:45 since that upload was going to take another 2 hours.  When I got in this morning, I found out the power went out last night, canceling 1 of my 2 uploads.  I decided to blare britney spears in lieu of a tantrum and danced around the office while fixing my afternoon breakfast of special K.  Tomorrow is my day off – I plan to take full advantage (which probably means watching Grey’s and movies all day in my bed… in my new room… with cool a/c)

Independence Day in Basra

July 8th, 2009

Me, Tyty and BrandonWe didn’t shoot off any illegal fireworks for the 4th, although we could have probably put on a good show with tracers and grenades.  We did however celebrate like full-blooded Americans – with a cookout. Read the rest of this entry »

Banished to Charlie?

June 30th, 2009

I mentioned a rumor a couple of weeks ago that people not following the rules in Red Bull LSA would get kicked out and made to live in Camp Charlie – the tent city I call home.  That rumor was confirmed today as I read through the Basra Billeting SOP.   Read the rest of this entry »

Rocking the Rocker

June 19th, 2009

I don’t want to be “that sergeant.”  You know the one I’m talking about – the sergeant that is constantly looking for infractions of stupid rules (that shouldn’t be rules in the first place) so they can use their power and drop a soldier to feel better about themselves.  I’m not that sergeant, and am pretty lenient and laid back about a lot of things.  This week, I stretched these stripes a little bit. Vehicle Shuffle

June 17th, 2009

The beauty of Iraq is our section of 20+ people has one vehicle to share while each contractor is given his very own road-hogging SUV.  Although COB Basra isn’t a very big compound, we covet the luxury of driving in a semi-A/C’d Tahoe to get from point A to point B.   Read the rest of this entry »
